Let’s be clear- News Ltd is in the game of Rugby League for one reason – Money, and there is lots of it to be made in the form of advertising and sponsorship dollars and the sale of television rights.
Its all about money
News Ltd is the sole owner of the Melbourne Storm and part owner of the Brisbane Broncos. The company also owns half of the NRL, the body which runs the sport. News Limited also owns most the newspapers in this country and in most capital cities it owns the only daily newspaper.
News Ltd uses its considerable resources to manipulate the game of Rugby League to suit itself. This manipulation is mainly in the form of promoting and expanding the game to build profit but the situation is clearly dangerous.
Why does it matter?
When the NRL auditor found that Melbourne Storm was operating in breach of the Leagues salary cap rules the entire matter should have been investigated publicly. Fans of the Storm and other clubs who support the game have a right to know what was going on, that is how democracy works.
What did happen and this will come out eventually was that David Gallop and a few, select News Ltd executives came to an agreement on what should be done to punish the Storm.
They acted as judge and jury – played God and that’s clearly wrong.
Why did News Ltd and the NRL go to such lengths to stop the independent directors of the club achieving a public airing of what went on in the storm? Well the answer is News Ltd does not want you to know about how it manipulates the game and the man who runs it, David Gallop. News Ltd have plans to install Gallop as their man at the new independent commission which will ensure the company still determines what goes on despite the appearance of independence. This is wrong and it is dangerous and it is not how democracy works.
We need to see the big picture and wake up to what is happening
Why have we not read in any of the News Ltd newspapers over the past two days – the arguments being put by the independent directors? Simply, News Ltd executives have decided we don’t need to know about the alternative view. This is wrong and this is dangerous.

He might yet be in for a shock (stay tuned). This is a very weak man. This is a man unfit to run the league and he is in his current position because he does what News Ltd tell him to and the company attack dogs are despatched to protect him against any critics.
A Chilling Thought – Consider this;
Many in the Labor Party believe what has happened with the Storm and in particular the treatment News Ltd has dished out to the independent directors is very wrong and very dangerous. But you will not see politicians saying that publicly at this time. Prime Ministerr, Julia Gillard is the club’s number one ticket holder and Victorian Premier, John Brumby is a supporter of the team but they wont speak up at this time – why? They are both scared of what News Ltd would do to the through its papers in the up coming elections.
That is not the democracy that the ANZACs fought and died to protect, you don’t get to manipulate this country just because you have more money than other people, or do you?
